PROSPECTS FOR THE CULTIVATION AND USE OF ESSENTIAL OIL SPECIES OF THE GENUS MONARDA L. IN UKRAINE

Abstract
Since the end of the 20th century, scientists have been actively studying the bactericidal and fungicidal properties of essential oils of the genus Monarda L. (Lamiaceae), rich in thymol and carvacrol – powerful antiseptics. This North American spice and aromatic crop has been cultivated for over 300 years in the USA, Canada, and Europe (about 2–2.5 thousand hectares). In Ukraine, breeders from the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences have created adapted varieties: Premier (M. fistulosa, 0.8% oil, 78.3% thymol), Fortuna (winter-hardy), Tenderness (M. didyma), and Tonya (hybrid) for the southern steppe. Oils from leaves and flowers (citrus, mint aroma) are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, aromatherapy, and food. High antimicrobial potential justifies commercial cultivation for the domestic market. З кінця XX ст. науковці активно вивчають бактерицидні та фунгіцидні властивості ефірних олій роду Monarda L. (Lamiaceae), багатого на тимол і карвакрол – потужні антисептики. Ця північноамериканська пряноароматична культура культивується понад 300 років у США, Канаді, Європі (близько 2– 2,5 тис. га). В Україні селекціонери НААН створили адаптовані сорти: Прем'єра (M. fistulosa, 0,8% олії, 78,3% тимолу), Фортуна (зимостійкий), Ніжність (M. didyma), Тоня (гібрид) для південного Степу. Олії з листків і квіток (цитрусовий, м'ятний аромат) застосовують у фармацевтиці, косметиці, ароматерапії, харчуванні. Високий антимікробний потенціал обґрунтовує комерційне вирощування для вітчизняного ринку.
