Abstract
The mid-western coast adjoining the Arabian Sea forms the Uttar Kannada and Goa coastal regions. It lies between 14° N and 16° N latitudes. This is a transitional zone between the Malabar Coast to its south and the Konkan Coast to its north. It is a narrow coastal lowland but not a plain. It is physically the mid-section of the Arabian Sea coast between Khambhat and Kanyakumari. It lies entirely to the west of the Western Ghats and differs in its physical and cultural aspects to an extent from the coast both to its north and to its south. Though contiguous, the coast also differs in its maritime heritage characteristics.
