A refuge of association for algae faced with intensive grazing on sea urchin barrens

Abstract
Areas devoid of fleshy macrophytes, termed urchin barrens, predominate on rocky subtidal habitats along most of the coast of eastern Canada (except in areas of Nova Scotia affected by periodic mass mortalities of urchins from disease). We examine how patches of the brown alga Desmarestia viridis provide a refuge permitting juvenile macrophytes to become established. D. viridis is an annual phaeophyte which becomes established in the winter, when urchin ingestion rates are low, and their feeding is further limited by heavy wave action. By May it often attains a 80 cm in height and its highly branched filamentous structure arising from a small stipe causes it to sweep over the bottom with even slight wave action.
