Abstract
La rareté des journaux rédigés par les paysans, notamment pour l’Ancien Régime, renforce l’intérêt de leur publication. Celui-ci n’émane pas de l’élite paysanne mais d’un laboureur pluriactif comme il y en avait tant au xviiie siècle en Haute-Normandie. Installé à Bueil, dans la vallée d’Eure, tout à la fois laboureur, vigneron, engraisseur de moutons, prestataire de services, etc., François Jacques Maret note scrupuleusement ses relations d’affaires dans ce qui est en fait un livre de comptabilité qui s’échelonne sur trente ans. On y retrouve des éléments sur les récoltes et les ventes de celles-ci (du vin notamment mais aussi du poisson), les achats et cessions de bestiaux, tout particulièrement des moutons qui sont devenus sa grande préoccupation. Sous sa plume, on saisit également les modalités et la durée des paiements, qu’il s’agisse des salaires des domestiques ou journaliers, ou du règlement des marchés auxquelles il se trouve mêlé, comme vendeur ou acheteur, voire emprunteur..
