Abstract

A relationship between thyroid dysfunction and breast cancer risk has long been suspected. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are both relatively common in women and frequently coexist with breast cancer, creating a complex ‘web’ of possible interactions. Thyroid hormones function in large part by binding to thyroid hormone receptors (THRs), which have been identified in some breast cancer tissues.1–3 Other well-studied hormones, including oestrogen, progesterone and androgens, exert their influence by binding to their ligand receptors in breast and other tissues.
