A Communication-Assisted Protection Scheme for Medium Voltage Distribution Lines in Inverter-Based Isolated Microgrids

Abstract
The growing penetration of renewable energy sources in power systems has led to a widespread deployment of inverter-based resource (IBR) in isolated microgrids (IMGs). Due to fundamental differences in the fault behavior compared to conventional synchronous generator (SG)-based systems, inverter-based isolated microgrids (IBIMGs) present unique protection challenges. This paper introduces a new communication-assisted protection scheme for short circuit fault (SCF) detection in medium-voltage distribution lines of IBIMGs. The proposed method employs intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) installed at both ends of each power line to monitor three-phase voltage and current for detection, classification, and determination of the direction of SCFs. A faulty line is identified and isolated through a pilot-based mechanism, in which only status signals are exchanged between the IEDs, minimizing communication requirements. The proposed scheme ensures fast and dependable SCF detection, provides the backup protection capability, and eliminates the need for high-speed data transmission and synchronization required by conventional differential protection schemes.
