External Quantum Efficiency Evolution of Light-Emitting Diodes under γ-rays, Electrons, Neutrons and Protons

Abstract
Thanks to their many advantages over traditional light sources, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are being more and more deployed worldwide. Accordingly, they are inevitably making their way to radiation environments as well. This implementation needs to be accompanied by the proper tools to assess their capability to withstand the effects of ionizing radiation. This work proposes the external quantum efficiency (EQE) as a figure of merit capable of investigating the currentdependent light emission of LEDs and their degradation when exposed to radiation. The capabilities of this method are here proven, investigating the effects of different radiation types, such as Co<sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">60</sup> γ-rays, 6 MeV electrons, 63 MeV protons and atmospheric neutrons on commercial LEDs combining different technologies on the same component.
