Abstract
Este ensayo analiza La venganza (1909) de Manuel Ciges Aparicio como una significativa contribución a El Cuento Semanal, colección representativa de la modernidad cultural orientada al entretenimiento y al consumo de masas. La novela combina elementos del naturalismo y del costumbrismo para construir un sur de España exótico y marginal. A través del buhonero y la figura de Pablilla, encarnación del deseo y la víctima sacrificial, se exploran temas de violencia, raza y género. El ensayo argumenta que Ciges Aparicio, mediante una prosa que oscila entre lo etnográfico y lo literario, no solo reproduce, sino que interroga los discursos de “civilización” propios del fin de siglo.
