Listening Again: Media, Music, and Intergenerational Cultural Negotiation in Diasporic Contexts

Abstract
This paper examines how music-based media functions as a site of cultural nego- tiation across generations and diasporic contexts. Drawing on cultural studies and audience theory, it explores how familiar musical texts, reintroduced through contem- porary media formats, facilitate processes of memory, identity, and belonging. Using Pakistan Idol as a case, the paper argues that cultural affiliation is not sustained through preservation alone but through active, affective, and interpretive engagement. For diasporic audiences in particular, digital circulation enables renewed encounters with cultural forms that are neither purely nostalgic nor static. Instead, media be- comes a space where cultural meaning is continually reassembled, allowing individuals to negotiate continuity and change across time, place, and generation.
