Abstract
This reflection explores the interplay between community, choice, and authenticity in an age shaped by individualism. Beginning with a memory of the way in which a community once kept a herd of cows, it examines how their disappearance symbolizes the erosion of shared practices and the rise of the “buffered self,” as articulated by Charles Taylor. Through Taylor's framework of secularity and authenticity, and theological insights, particularly from Miroslav Volf, the reflection suggests that true identity and formation arise not in isolation but through communal participation. The cows, once central to a rhythm of shared life, represent a formative practice lost to the prioritization of individual autonomy. Through this reflection, the authentic life is shown to be found in community and communion with others, creation, and God.
