Un rapport de la FAO de 2014 vantant le potentiel des insectes comestibles pour le développement durable a suscité un important engouement pour l’entomoculture au Québec : la filière y est en pleine expansion depuis. Toutefois, les maladies infectieuses représentent un enjeu majeur dans les fermes d’insectes, notamment celles de ténébrions meuniers (Tenebrio molitor). Le développement d’outils diagnostiques, tels que les analyses hématologiques, permettrait un meilleur contrôle des agents pathogènes dans les élevages, mais ces outils demeurent indisponibles. À cet effet, le présent projet vise à établir des intervalles de référence pour les paramètres hémocytaires chez les différents stades de développement du ténébrion meunier. Diverses adaptations aux techniques hématologiques classiques ont été apportées afin de permettre la collecte d’hémolymphe, la préparation de frottis et l’utilisation de l’hémocytomètre chez cette espèce. La classification des hémocytes a été solidifiée, et des hémocytes géants multinucléés ont été identifiés, à notre connaissance, pour la première fois chez les coléoptères. Des intervalles de référence pour les comptages hémocytaires total et différentiel ont chacun été établis à partir d’une quarantaine d’échantillons, et ce, pour les stades larvaire et imaginal (adulte). Des différences significatives ont été relevées entre ces stades, indiquant la nécessité de valeurs de référence spécifiques à chaque stade de développement. De manière générale, ces travaux contribueront à la mise en place d’un suivi sanitaire dans les fermes de ténébrions, favorisant ainsi la résilience de cette filière émergente.
