Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This article examines the notion of egotrip in French rap. While this concept mainly refers to rappers’ tendency to praise themselves (or anything related to themselves), it also includes a fundamental element of rivalry, whereby rappers belittle, denigrate, and invalidate their “competitors.” Two conceptualizations of egotripping are discussed: those of Julien Barret (2008) and Christian Béthune (2003), based respectively on the prominence of phonetic relationships and figures of speech, and on the anchoring of individual rappers in an oppressive cultural context. By attempting to link these theories of egotrip – which are widely used in studies on rap – to a theory of poetic subjectivity, the aim is to explore the artistic, and therefore collective, potential of the rivalry inherent in egotrip, beyond a study of the technicality of language or an affirmation of individuality.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
