RUSSIAN ÉMIGRÉ SCIENTISTS IN FRANCE AND SOIL RESEARCH IN NORTH AFRICA DURING THE INTERWAR PERIOD

Abstract
This article explores the contribution of Russian émigré scientists to the soil research in North Africa during the interwar period. The author focuses on the scientific activity of Valerian Konstantinovich Agafonov, who was V. V. Dokuchayev’s student, the Poltava Expedition participant, and later an active member of French scientific community. After emigrating, Agafonov developed an ambitious program for investigating the soil of the French colonies, beginning with research in Tunisia, supported by the French Academy of Sciences and the Institute for Agronomic Research. He established a research group that included Russian émigrés Vera Malysheva, Georges Jouravsky, Leonid Yankovitch, and Georges Bryssine. Their work encompassed a broad range of activities, from field and laboratory investigations to the development of scientific infrastructure and the training of local personnel. The article analyses the institutional frameworks, methodological principles, and organisational strategies employed by these researchers within the context of French colonial policy. It highlights how émigré specialists preserved continuity with the Dokuchayev School while simultaneously adapting their approaches to the specificities of colonial administration and the practical demands of agrarian modernisation. Agafonov’s epistolary legacy, particularly his correspondence with V. I. Vernadsky, helps to reconstruct key aspects of scientific communication and practice. Using the case of scientific expansion in Tunisia and Morocco, the author demonstrates how émigré science became embedded in transnational knowledge flows and participated in the formation of colonial agronomic policy. This study contributes to ongoing discussions at the interaction of the history of science, emigration, and colonialism in the first half of the twentieth century.
