Revision of the Genus Diaphylla Erichson, 1847 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Macrodactylini), with Description of a New Species from Chile

Abstract
Diaphylla Erichson, 1847 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Macrodactylini), an uncommon genus precinctive to southern South America, is comprehensively revised and now includes three valid species: Diaphylla granulata Philippi, 1864, Diaphylla hispida Erichson, 1847, and Diaphylla josetomasi Mondaca and Smith, new species. Based on examination of type specimens of all species-group names, Diaphylla luctuosa Philippi, 1864, Diaphylla ornata Philippi, 1864, and Diaphylla lampropyga Philippi, 1864 are new synonyms of D. hispida. Lectotypes are designated for D. granulata, D. hispida, D. lampropyga, D. luctuosa, and D. ornata. A redescription and characters that define the genus, species diagnoses, natural history, distribution records through specimens collected and citizen science reports, and a key to species are presented. Photographs of the type, non-type, and live specimens and male genital structures are provided. The systematic position of the genus within Macrodactylini is discussed and confirmed.
