Abstract
This article has two aims: to examine how the historical conflict between anglophone and francophone communities shaped Canada’s official bilingualism policy, and to assess whether this conflict remains relevant to understanding today’s linguistic dualism. The theoretical section offers a sociolinguistic perspective on bilingualism, focusing on official bilingualism as a state policy. The empirical part presents the results of a qualitative case study based on four semi-structured interviews with Franco-Ontarian participants. The analysis identifies three interrelated dimensions that continue to structure anglophone–francophone relations in Ontario: persistent mutual prejudice manifesting in institutional contexts, ongoing linguistic assimilation, and systemic inequalities accompanied by experiences of linguistic discrimination. These findings show that linguistic peace remains unachieved and rivalry endures as a defining feature of Canada’s sociolinguistic landscape.
