First Records of Silpha (Phosphuga) atrata Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae) in North America

Abstract
The first North American records of Silpha (Phosphuga) atrata Linnaeus, 1758, a carrion beetle native to Eurasia, are reported from British Columbia and Québec, Canada. These records are based on 13 observations of adult specimens in British Columbia between 2021 and 2025 and 77 individuals collected in Québec between 2021 and 2023. The introduction pathways in North America and precise geographical origin of the species remain uncertain but are likely linked to human transports. The potential ecological impacts of this adventive species on North American ecosystems are unknown and require further research. These records highlight the need for enhanced monitoring efforts for non-native species.
