Abstract
In Political Culture in Louis XIV’s Canada: Majesty, Ritual, and Rhetoric, Colin M. Coates examines the political culture that the French established in a small overseas colony in the Saint Lawrence Valley during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which came to be known as New France. French officials used cultural practices to construct and strengthen French colonial power. Beyond attempting to impose their political systems on Indigenous territories, French officials introduced recognizably French Catholicism, an agrarian economy, and trade practices. Although French settlers rarely returned to France or visited other French colonies, they maintained their connection to France through their identities as subjects of the French Crown. Their construction of state systems emphasized the reign of the “Sun King” Louis XIV, an absolutist monarch. This book does not celebrate the settler colonial state. Instead, it investigates how French colonial officials employed monarchical symbols and rituals to establish state legitimacy for their colonial settler subjects.
