Książka, która oddajemy w ręce Czytelników, to rezultat pracy interdyscyplinarnego zespołu badaczy z Polski i Włoch, podejmujących refleksje nad Risorgimento jako idea narodowego odrodzenia, wolności i solidarności, łącząca doświadczenia obu narodów. Publikacja ukazuje włoskie zmagania o jedność i niepodległość, które stały się dla Polaków inspiracją do własnego „odrodzenia”, od epoki romantyzmu po czasy współczesne. Autorzy przedstawiają Risorgimento jako uniwersalny symbol obywatelskiego przebudzenia, którego znaczenie wykracza poza XIX wiek, współtworząc duchowa mapę Europy. „Naród i wolność. Oto niepodzielny dwumian obu naszych Risorgimentów... w tych latach wielkich niepokojów, wielkich konfliktów, ale i wielkich nadziei” – przypomina Giovanni Spadolini, nadając tej refleksji ponadczasowy wymiar.
