Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the identification of archaeological heritage sites in the Novosibirsk Ob region described in the 18th century. The travel notes of D.G. Messerschmidt and I.G. Gmelin are one of the first sources on the archaeological heritage of the Novosibirsk region. Data on various archaeological sites (mounds, hillforts) and accidental finds located along the old Moscow highway and its environs are quite acceptable for their identification with currently known objects of archaeological heritage. Equally important is the establishment of the efficiency of dissemination of information about the attitude of the Russian state at the beginning of the 18th century to ancient objects of historical and cultural significance discovered in the south of Western Siberia.
