Abstract
This essay examines how Sandra Brewster’s works Hiking Black Creek and Feeding Trafalgar Square bring attention to the challenges faced by Afro-Caribbean immigrants and their descendants in establishing a Canadian identity while experiencing both a sense of belonging and alienation. Drawing on scholarship from Black studies, Black feminism, and art history, it explores how Brewster innovatively uses spatial knowledges, personal archives, and labor-intensive materials to foreground Black presence, memory, and resistance. Through her artistic practice, Brewster contributes to the study of Black geographies and positions contemporary art as a space for reimagining identity and preserving marginalized histories.
