Abstract
Grain boundary borides were detected in model Ni-Cu-B alloys by nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffractometry. Boron enrichment at grain boundaries was also observed in commercially available Monel 400. Potentiostatic corrosion experiments showed that intergranular attack occurred in Ni-Cu alloys containing 100 ppm or 1,000 ppm boron, and in commercially available Monel 400, while no intergranular attack was observed in a pure Ni-Cu alloy. The perceived existence of grain boundary borides is believed to be the cause of intergranular attack observed in ex-service nuclear steam generator tubing made of Monel 400.
