Abstract
Purpose This study aims to study the life of Carl Rogers as a psychotherapeutic revolutionary. Design/methodology/approach To this end, Life Positioning theory and analysis are used as psyhobiographical tools. Findings Carl Rogers was relentless in promoting his person-centered approach to psychotherapy and its wider relevance to conflict resolution and potentially to world peace. In doing so, he positioned himself as a psychotherapeutic revolutionary. Yet, in many ways, Rogers’ approach to life and therapy was quintessentially American in its promotion of personal freedom and fulfillment as indicative of personal and social progress. In this, Rogers was a classic American liberal who faced a core dilemma of making his personal and professional self-development consistent with his efforts to help others. He was a helper seeking help; a savior courting salvation. Originality/value Life Positioning theory and analysis help to ensure that psychobiographers ground their work not only in the inner psychological functioning of focal subjects but also in their sociocultural life contexts and circumstances.
