Reuse of Yellow Phosphorus Slag Modified With Triacetoxy(viny)silane as an Additive for Epoxy Coatings

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study explored the use of yellow phosphorus slag (YPS) particles as additives in epoxy resin coatings for metal protection. To improve compatibility and dispersion within the epoxy matrix, the YPS particles were surface‐modified with triacetoxy(vinyl)silane (TAVS). Characterization using FTIR, TGA, and zeta potential confirmed successful grafting of hydrolyzed TAVS onto the YPS surface. The effects of modified YPS (mYPS) content on epoxy coating performance were compared to the coatings containing unmodified YPS (uYPS). While pendulum hardness remained similar between both types, coatings with mYPS demonstrated superior adhesion and abrasion resistance, with respective increases of 25% and 20% over coatings with the uYPS. Thermal stability was also enhanced, as the onset degradation temperature for mYPS‐based coatings was 7°C higher. SEM analysis revealed improved particle dispersion and matrix compatibility in mYPS coatings, likely contributing to their enhanced performance. These results suggest that mYPS improves the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy coatings more effectively than the uYPS. Overall, the mYPS shows promise as a functional filler material for developing high‐performance epoxy coatings in corrosion protection applications.
