Resumen Se ha demostrado que con la edad se pierden ciertas funciones psicomotoras, por lo que las personas son propensas a sufrir accidentes o situaciones de riesgo, generando que requieran cuidadores, los cuales suelen dedicar gran parte de su tiempo a la persona dependiente, provocando un agotamiento físico y emocional, lo que conlleva a una sobrecarga del cuidador. Los cambios cognitivos son una de las principales causas de discapacidad teniendo como factor de riesgo el estrés y la depresión. Objetivo: Determinar si existe asociación entre deterioro cognitivo con la sobrecarga del cuidador de adultos mayores con limitaciones físicas. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal, prospectivo, analítico mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por cuotas en 133 personas, se seleccionó a los derechohabientes mayores de 49 años de ambos sexos, cuidadores de adulto mayores con limitaciones físicas que acudieran a consulta en ambos turnos de la unidad, se aplicó 2 cuestionarios, el Test sobre la carga del cuidador Zarit y la Evaluación Cognitiva Montreal (MOCA) y se recolectaron datos sociodemográficos. La asociación entre la sobrecarga del cuidador y el deterioro cognitivo se determinó a través de la prueba estadística X2. Resultados: Se encontró para la asociación entre sobrecarga del cuidador y deterioro cognitivo que de los 133 participantes 35.3% presentó sobrecarga leve y deterioro cognitivo, mientras que 22.6% de los cuidadores se encontró con sobrecarga intensa y deterioro cognitivo, Se obtuvo un valor de p= 0.009. Conclusión: Se encontró una significancia estadística entre la sobrecarga del cuidador y el deterioro cognitivo. Abstract It has been shown that certain psychomotor functions are lost with age, making people prone to accidents or risky situations, requiring caregivers who often devote much of their time to the dependent person, causing physical and emotional exhaustion, which leads to caregiver overload. Cognitive changes are one of the main causes of disability, with stress and depression being risk factors. Objective: To determine whether there is an association between cognitive impairment and caregiver overload in older adults with physical limitations. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective, analytical study was conducted using non-probabilistic quota sampling in 133 people. Beneficiaries over the age of 49 of both sexes were selected, as well as caregivers of older adults with physical limitations who attended consultations in both shifts of the unit. Two questionnaires were administered: the Zarit Caregiver Burden Test and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA), and sociodemographic data were collected. The association between caregiver burden and cognitive impairment was determined using the X2 statistical test. Results: The association between caregiver burden and cognitive impairment was found in 35.3% of the 133 participants, who presented mild burden and cognitive impairment, while 22.6% of caregivers presented intense burden and cognitive impairment. A p-value of 0.009 was obtained. Conclusion: A statistically significant association was found between caregiver burden and cognitive impairment.
