Abstract
Abstract. The purpose of the article is to analyze Mykola Bytynsty’s (1893-1972) documents. He was a heraldist, a poet, a prose writer, a publicist, an art critic, and a lieutenant colonel of UPR’s army. Fond 5235 is kept at the State Central Archive of the Higher Authorities and Administration of Ukraine. The research methodology is based on the methodology of source studies, which are associated with the identification and selection of sources, their comprehensive objective analysis, and the establishment of the reliability of information about Mykola Overko Bytynsky’s life and activity. The biographical method is also used, the application of which will make it possible to study the peculiarities of the figure’s life. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the M. Bytynsky’s documents, which were rarely used in Ukrainian historiography, including biographical research, are introduced into scientific circulation. They are a vivid example of how Ukrainian heraldry developed during emigration. Prospects for further research. As for today, the figure's papers include 24 files, which include biographical notes, correspondence, and works. These documents are important for expanding knowledge of Ukrainian heraldic science in Europe and North America. A thorough study of these files can illuminate hitherto unknown pages of the history of Ukrainian emigration and Mykola Bytynsky's biography. Conclusions. His life was colorful. He trained as a painter, studied art and literature, and served in the army of the Russian Empire, the UPR army, the Ukrainian Galician Army, and the army of Carpathian Ukraine. He was in internment camps for the UPR military, in Poland, studied in Prague, lived in Germany, and later in Canada, working as a teacher in various Ukrainian educational institutions. In his work, Mykola Bytynsky made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian heraldic science abroad. He had his own vision of the state symbols of the Ukrainian People's Republic, criticizing other projects. He created such awards as the Order of Symon Petliura and the Iron Cross, developed the Small, Medium, and Large Coats of Arms of Ukraine, and insisted on the yellow and blue flag of our state.
