19yy.’da fotoğrafçılığın Osmanlı coğrafyasına girmesi Osmanlı Devleti’nin yabancılar nezdinde daha yakından tanınmasını mümkün kıldı. Bu tarihten itibaren İstanbul’un birçok yeri fotoğraflandırıldı. Fotoğrafçılığın yaygınlaşması beraberinde yeni bir iletişim metodu geliştirdi. Çekilen fotoğrafların basılarak kartpostal olarak çoğaltılması haberleşmenin yanı sıra belli mekânları öne çıkardı ve dönemin kültürel, sosyal, siyasi olayların öğrenilmesini sağladı. Osmanlı Devleti’nde ilk resimli kartpostal yayıncılığı Avusturya-Macaristan uyruklu Max Fruchtermann tarafından başlatıldı ve 1923 yılına kadar Osmanlı Coğrafyasında 300’e yakın editör faaliyet gösterdi. Yüzyıllarca Padişahların ikametgahı olan Topkapı Sarayı da bu editörlerin ilgi alanına girmiştir. Bu makalede kartpostalın kısa tarihi ve Topkapı Sarayı temasının kartpostallarda yer alışı örneklendirilip değerlendirilmektedir
