Abstract
Comment Charles Le Brun devint-il premier peintre de Louis XIV ? Tirant profit de la découverte de nouvelles œuvres peintes, dessinées et gravées, de nombreux documents d’archives inédits et d’une lecture critique des sources, cet ouvrage reconsidère l’ascension du peintre en articulant réseau social et création artistique. Issu d’un milieu familial modeste, mais lié au monde de l’écriture et à celui de la gravure pour lequel il produisit ses premières œuvres, Le Brun n’était pas un héritier. Mais il fut assurément une « créature », au sens du XVIIe siècle : la protection du chancelier Séguier lui permit d’accéder à des commandes prestigieuses – du cardinal de Richelieu comme plus tard du roi –, de fréquenter un milieu de lettrés, de partir à Rome en compagnie de Nicolas Poussin, ou encore de consolider les fondements de l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. À la tête de chantiers de décoration à Paris et à Vaux-le-Vicomte, Le Brun sollicita de nombreux collaborateurs avec lesquels il entretint des liens juridiques, artistiques et sociaux dont l’analyse éclaire les modes de production au Grand Siècle et invite à remettre en cause la conception actuelle de la notion d’« atelier ».
