Abstract
O presente estudo centra-se no último quarto do século 19 a fim de abarcar o contexto gerador e o processo histórico da construção social da idéia de maternidade intensiva e de medicalização da infância, como projetos republicanos de reforma social. A cidade de Pelotas - RS é tomada como Iócus de análise por apresentar um desenvolvimento de destaque no contexto rio-grandense desse período. Essa situação de destaque caracteriza-se pelo enaltecimento à cultura e pela busca da civilidade dos costumes, combinados à prosperidade econômica Entre a caridade e a filantropia, são criadas a Roda dos Expostos e o Asilo de Órfãos como dispositivos de proteção à infância.Palavras-chave: assistência à infância, história da educação infantil, história de Pelotas/RS.
