O osteossarcoma ou sarcoma osteogênico é a neoplasia óssea primária mais diagnosticada no cão sendo responsável de 80% a 85% das neoplasias com origem no esqueleto. O osteossarcoma é caracterizado pelo crescimento de células neoplásicas que formam osso imaturo e ou osteóide, apresentando comprtamento agressivo tanto no local do crescimento quanto na formação de metástases, causando grave desagregação do osso acomentido. O osteossarcoma ocorre em cães de média idade, em torno de 7 anos. Cães de raças grandes ou gigantes são suscetíveis ao desenvolvimento do tumor, tais como Great Dane, Greyhound, Rottweiler, Fila Brasileiro, São Bernardo, Dinamarquês, Setter Irlandês, Doberman, Pastor Alemão, Golden Retriever, Boxer, Labrador e Mastiff. A amputação tem sido a opção disponível para o tratamento de osteossarcoma. Entretanto, 85% dos cães, que são submetidos a esse procedimento morrem após um ano, devido à metástase. Após este período, 15% dos cães que não desenvolveram metástases, são considerados curados. Neste relato será abordado o caso clínico de um cão mestiço das raças Fila Brasileiro e Mastiff Inglês, fêmea, que desenvolveu osteossarcoma apendicular na região proximal da tíbia.
