Abstract
This work describes the activities performed during the Mandatory Supervised Internship, held at the Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid, located in Mossoró - Rio Grande do Norte. The internship was developed from March 15, 2021 to May 14, 2021, counting the workload of 240 hours. During the internship, the clinical care of dogs and cats was monitored, in which the case of a canine diagnosed with chondrosarcoma was chosen for the elaboration of a report. The patient was a male, Labrador retriever, 1 year old, not neutered, weighing 30 kg, with anorexia and a nodule in the left thoracic region. After anamnesis and physical examination, neoplasia was suspected, and additional tests were requested. Radiographic and ultrasound examinations found the presence of a large mass in the abdominal and thoracic region, suggestive of neoplasia. Thus, it was discussed with the tutor the performance of a surgical procedure, to evaluate a possible removal of the tumor and to collect material for biopsy. During the surgery, involvement of Organs internal organs and pulmonary metastasis were seen, so the total removal of the mass was not feasible. In this context, part of the tumor was sectioned and the sample sent for biopsy. As a terminal cancer patient, supportive treatment was instituted, but the patient died of complications from the oncological condition. It was then possible to conclude that the supervised internship is an important step for the formation of a trained Veterinarian. It was also concluded that chondrosarcoma can manifest itself in young animals in an aggressive way, presenting low responsiveness to therapy when it involves metastasis, being a great challenge for the veterinary clinician. Thus, justifying the importance of this report for the area of veterinary oncology.
