O trabalho demonstra que, para os anos 90, o avanço das atividades ligadas à economia informal não se apresenta mais como fenômeno transitório na sociedade brasileira, mas como fato comprovado empiricamente para as principais regiões metropolitanas. Analisando o comércio ambulante, fica nítida a tendência da economia do Rio de Janeiro de continuar sofrendo um lento processo de esvaziamento econômico: a população economicamente ativa (PEA) e a população ocupada (PO) regional tiveram as menores taxas de expansão de todas as regiões metropolitanas, enquanto a participação dos ambulantes teve crescimento positivo. A relação destes últimos com a PEA apresenta a segunda trajetória mais expressiva da economia metropolitana nacional. Assim, pode-se concluir que o Rio de Janeiro se mantém na rota de precarização das relações de trabalho. O artigo analisa ainda o perfil dos ambulantes metropolitanos do Grande Rio, segundo sexo, idade, escolaridade, posição na família e rendimentos.
