Abstract
This study analyzes the U.S. pulp imports in the period from 2001 to 2012, verifying the degree of concentration and inequality, as well as the Brazilian participation in this market. To calculate of the concentration index the methods of Bain and Herfindahl-Hirschman were used; while for the determination of the inequality the Gini index was used. The results showed that U.S. pulp imports were characterized as dominated and with high inequality character, due to massive Canadian and Brazilian participation. Furthermore, we observed an increase of the Brazilian participation in U.S. pulp import which rose from 15.1% in 2001 to 29.2% in 2012, accompanied by a reduction of the Canadian market share. This fact indicates an increase of Brazilian competitiveness in the American market.
