A nivel mundial, millones de recicladoras de base viven en condiciones precarias y son excluidas del espacio público, a pesar de que su trabajo es esencial para la sostenibilidad en el contexto actual de crisis ambiental. Esta investigación utilizó un enfoque de métodos mixtos para conocer las condiciones de vida y trabajo de las mujeres que reciclan en las calles de una ciudad intermedia, enfrentando problemáticas extremas laborales y sociales. El reciclaje es una actividad de supervivencia que exige un considerable desgaste físico causado por la extensión de las rutas y el peso del material. Sin embargo, el tejido social que las recicladoras construyen en sus zonas de recolección disminuye su vulnerabilidad en la ciudad. El estudio propone estrategias urbanas —aplicables a ciudades con características similares— para que sean implementadas y monitoreadas por los tomadores de decisiones, con miras a su integración en las políticas públicas.
