This full research paper presents a study that investigates the application of embodied conversational agent in the design of intelligent tutoring systems. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of existing techniques reveals the need of introducing a history of belief states as the run-time information about the leaner. This paper then develops a novel approach that analyzes the changing trend in belief state history and creates a mechanism to enable a tutoring system mimicking not only the intelligence but also the appearance of a human tutor. The incorporation of knowledge space theory in the ontology of domain modeling further allows the system to guide learners studying along targeted learning paths. This new approach overcomes the shortcoming of approaches using large language models and demonstrates advantages in curriculum-based online learning.
