AbstractWater fluoridation is a widely adopted public health practice designed to prevent dental caries by adjusting the fluoride concentration in public water supplies. While it has been recognized for its significant role in reducing the prevalence of tooth decay, it has also generated global debate due to concerns about possible adverse health effects. The objective of this integrative review was to investigate potential health outcomes associated with the consumption of fluoridated water. Comprehensive searches were carried out in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Study selection, data extraction, and assessment of bias were independently performed by three reviewers. To evaluate the studies methodological, the Modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was employed. Out of 65 initially identified articles, 23 met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review. Among these, 16 studies were considered to have moderate to high-quality evidence. Notably, only two studies reported a possible association between fluoridated water and negative health effects. The remaining studies either found no such association or reinforced the safety and benefits of water fluoridation. Therefore, despite the need for ongoing research and monitoring to ensure safety, current evidence supports the continued use of water fluoridation. Its established effectiveness in preventing dental caries justifies its implementation as a key strategy in promoting oral health at the population level. Keywords: Water Fluoridation. Resumo A fluoretação da água é uma prática de saúde pública amplamente adotada, com o objetivo de prevenir a cárie dentária por meio do ajuste da concentração de flúor nos sistemas públicos de abastecimento. Embora seja reconhecida por seu papel significativo na redução da incidência de cáries, essa medida também tem gerado debates em nível global, devido a preocupações sobre possíveis efeitos adversos à saúde. O objetivo desta revisão integrativa foi investigar os possíveis desfechos relacionados à saúde decorrentes do consumo de água fluoretada. Foram realizadas buscas nas bases de dados PubMed e Google Scholar. A seleção dos estudos, extração dos dados e avaliação do risco de viés foram realizadas de forma independente por três revisores. Para avaliar a qualidade metodológica dos estudos incluídos, utilizou-se a Escala de Newcastle-Ottawa Modificada. Dos 65 artigos inicialmente identificados, 23 foram considerados elegíveis para inclusão na revisão. Dentre esses, 16 estudos apresentaram evidência de qualidade moderada a alta. Apenas dois estudos sugeriram uma possível associação entre o consumo de água fluoretada e efeitos negativos à saúde. Os demais estudos não encontraram essa associação ou reforçaram a segurança e os benefícios da fluoretação. Assim, embora seja importante manter pesquisas e monitoramento contínuos, as evidências atuais apoiam a manutenção da fluoretação da água, cuja eficácia comprovada na prevenção da cárie dentária justifica sua adoção como estratégia essencial de promoção da saúde bucal coletiva.
