Strategies of corporeality in the fantasy metagenre of the first quarter of the ХХІ century
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The problem of strategies of corporeality in modern fantasy literature and cinema is very acute. A cross-sectional analysis of the Western fantasy corpus of the first quarter of the ХХІ century demonstrates the most prominent manifestation of the outlined artistic movements in female authorship, in connection with which there is a need to highlight the logic of the trends of the modern transformation of writers’ work with the “body” in this metagenre. The purpose of the proposed article is the first attempt to identify the leading strategies of corporeality in the fantasy metagenre of the first quarter of the XXI century – primarily in the samples of female authorship of the Western canon (S. Meyer, D. Harkness, R. Yarros, S. J. Maas, S. St. Clair). The key tasks of the investigation are respectively to highlight the plot-image typology of the novels of the mentioned authors, conditioned by the reflection in their works of the paradigmatic fantasy transformation of the first decades of the XXI century; to reveal the logic of the modification of the functions of the bodily factor in the American fantasy segment of 2000–2025 in connection with the prevalence of the feminine principle here. We apply the synthesized unity of comparative, psychoanalytic and hermeneutic research methods. The rebellion of the body against the spirit in the Western fantasy canon as we approach the 2020s is more often crowned with the prevalence of the body, the material. In maintaining the opposition “good – evil” in the fantasy paradigm of the XXI century supplemented by the third element, the heroine is for some time in the position of an ideologically neutral subject, but is more often inclined to choose the side of darkness. The fascination with depicting love and sexual vicissitudes often in women’s fantasy of this period does not leave authors time to qualitatively develop the fantasy picture of the world in the artistic work, which cannot but affect the quality of the text, which acquires certain features of the marginalized. The sexual maneuvers of heroines are increasingly associated with the motive of power. Using the material of samples of the Western canon, we determine the leading strategies of corporeality in fantasy of the ХХІ century in their development: from the entourage accompaniment of events to the not always justified strengthening of the role in the plot, when the body and sexual manipulations with it reach the level of almost a plot driver. Further study of the strategies of corporeality in the modern fantasy space is certainly promising.
