Abstract
The correspondence between Isabella Clara Eugenia of Austria (1566-1633) constitutes an invaluable source of information to get closer to the life and personality of this character. As the governor and later the regent of the Spanish Netherlands, her bond with the fine arts was especially significant although her role as patron and collectionist. Her fondness for the pictorical genre, specially for the portraiture, has remained reflected in her letters, which show the political, diplomatic or even affective motivations behind this element. The research of these works also represents a brief approach to the artistic exchanges between Spain and Flanders during the first quarter of the 17th century
