Depuis ses débuts sur la scène littéraire francophone à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans, Réjean Ducharme (1941-2017) est reconnu comme l’un des écrivains et dramaturges les plus marquants de la littérature québécoise. Malgré le succès immédiat que son premier roman, L’Avalée des avalés, publié chez Gallimard en 1966, a remporté en France comme au Québec, il a passé sa vie dans l’anonymat, en refusant toute apparition publique. L’édition complète de ses neuf romans, récemment parue dans la collection “Quarto” de Gallimard (éd. Nardout-Lafarge, avec la collaboration de Monique Bertrand et Monique Jean, 2022), a jeté une lumière nouvelle sur l’œuvre de l’auteur, décédé le 21 août 2017.Cet article s’attache aux inscriptions récurrentes d’Israël et de l’Amérique française dans plusieurs de ses romans, L’avalée des avalés (1966), Le nez qui voque (1967), Dévadé (1990) et Va savoir (1994) dont la publication s’étend sur une trentaine d’années. Ils sont désignés ici comme des “tropismes” pour souligner précisément la récurrence de ces lieux qui ne sont pas décrits mais évoqués, vers lesquels, littéralement, les textes “se tournent” qui y figurent des “orientations” privilégiées, des fascinations aussi, investies par le fantasme et la mémoire livresque. Il s’agit de faire dialoguer le traitement romanesque de ces deux tropismes avec les discours et représentations d’Israël et de l’Amérique française qui circulent et évoluent au même moment dans la société québécoise. Ainsi apparaissent à la fois une condamnation de l’idée de pays et de patrie, et, malgré l’ironie des textes, une sorte de nostalgie.
