Le terme « racisme environnemental », lancé par Benjamin Chavis et repris par Elliot Page, désigne la tendance des pays occidentaux à stocker des déchets toxiques ainsi qu’à installer des entreprises rejetant des polluants près des communautés racisées. Celles-ci répondent au danger de différentes manières. Entre autres, toute une « littérature trash » est en train de voir le jour, à cheval entre l’écopoétique, le post-Anthropocène et le militantisme politique. Les écrivains ne chantent plus le paysage canadien, ainsi que la vie traditionnelle des chasseurs amérindiens, mais braquent leurs objectifs sur le « ventre » de Montréal pour témoigner de la vie de tous ces Autochtones qui représentent 1% de la population de la métropole, mais 10% de ses SDF. L’article analyse le roman Tiochtiá:ke de Michel Jean, représentatif de ce genre émergeant qui est le roman citadin autochtone, et ses rapports avec la « littérature trash ».
