En 1978, Antonio D’Alfonso a fondé à Montréal la maison d’édition Guernica qui publiait en trois langues ; avec Filippo Salvatore et Fulvio Caccia, il a ensuite participé à la naissance de la littérature italo-canadienne et, avec des œuvres en anglais et en français, il est devenu une figure majeure de ce courant artistique. En 2021, il a inauguré un filon plus intime qui comprend des ouvrages autobiographiques (Outside Looking In, Dépaysé) et un essai, “Federazione per il futuro”, où il explore l’évolution de la culture “italique” produite dans le contexte de l’émigration italienne. La conversation porte sur cette culture dont l’intellectuel italo-canadien est le porte-parole. Les échanges de Ferraro avec D’Alfonso, nés au sein des activités organisés par le Centro di Cultura Canadese de Udine, enrichis au fil des années à travers une correspondance régulière et des rencontres à Montréal, ont permis d’approfondir et de définir les aspects-clé de sa pensée et de son œuvre. Sa condition d’exilé, au point de vue géographique, culturel et linguistique, a poussé Antonio D’Alfonso à réfléchir sur son identité composite, à créer des œuvres multilingues et transmédiales et à forger la notion d’“italique” pour faire ressortir, en essayant de la définir, la production invisible d’écrivains italiens à l’étranger, enfants de cette émigration qui a vidé l’Italie pendant des décennies. La perte de leur pays et de leur culture d’origine marque intimement les émigrés et leurs enfants, donnant aux œuvres nées dans ce contexte des caractéristiques qui découlent de cette déterritorialisation.
