Joseph Roth scheint auf den ersten Blick zu den konservativen Denkern zu gehören, die für das neue Medium Film nur Verachtung übrighaben. Doch in seinen frühen journalistischen Arbeiten begegnet uns Roth als Filmfreund. Er erkennt die künstlerischen Qualitäten expressionistischer Filme wie Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari oder Der letzte Mann, begeistert sich für Actionfilme und zeigt erstaunliche Einsichten in die Arbeitsweisen und medialen Eigenschaften des Films. Sein Plädoyer für die Erfassung der materiellen Welt durch den Film nimmt Gedanken vorweg, die Siegfried Kracauer in seiner Theorie des Films entwickelte.
