Cet article examine l’influence de la politique d’hospitalité conditionnelle du Canada sur les stratégies d’accès à la résidence permanente développées par les demandeur.ses d’asile mexicain.es en 2022 et 2023. À partir d’entrevues semi-dirigées menées auprès de huit demandeur.ses d’asile mexicain.es et d’extraits de discours institués du gouvernement canadien, l’analyse montre que la politique d’hospitalité canadienne est perçue par les participant.es comme un système d’immigration en deux étapes, dans lequel le statut temporaire est perçu comme une « période d’essai » à l’intégration permanente. Les stratégies développées par les participant.es révèlent ainsi un processus complexe de négociation, visant à faire reconnaître à la fois leur besoin de protection et leur capacité à contribuer économiquement à la société d’accueil.
