Issu d’entretiens avec des consommatrices de new romance, cet article explore comment celles-ci contournent, transgressent ou reconduisent les scripts de l’hétérosexualité hégémonique. Ces lectrices, à l’intersection d’enjeux spécifiques de genre et de classe sociale, revendiquent ces lectures comme des moments érotiques à soi, qu’elles justifient moralement par opposition à la pornographie. Ces romances viennent alors légitimer de nouveaux horizons (hétéro)sexuels par l’incorporation partielle de pratiques subalternes. Elles permettent ainsi aux lectrices de négocier des féminités désirantes sans contrevenir à l’impératif de respectabilité auquel elles sont tenues. Les politiques de respectabilité dans lesquelles elles s’engagent concourent alors à une recomposition située de l’hétéronormativité.
