Le problme au coeur de l'tude de H. Boston est celui de la pratique de la seigneurie multiple.Prenant pour cadre le Leicestershire, le Derbyshire et le Staffordshire au cours d'un long XII e sicle (v.1066-v.1216), l'autrice s'intresse plus particulirement aux membres de la petite aristocratie laque qui devaient allgeance plusieurs seigneurs. travers cinq chapitres -un chapitre quantitatif, trois chapitres thmatiques et une tude du cas de Burton-upon-Trent -H.Boston dfend la thse que la seigneurie multiple, considre dans l'historiographie anglo-amricaine comme une exception la norme, tait en ralit une forme de liens sociaux antrieure la conqute normande, bien tablie en Angleterre ds le dbut du XI e sicle et prenne travers les sicles ultrieurs du Moyen ge.
