Abstract
Les romans de Dominique Fortier brossent un tableau original du continent américain, depuis les solitudes glacées du passage du Nord-Ouest ( Du bon usage des étoiles , 2008) jusqu’au soleil de la Martinique ( Les larmes de Saint-Laurent , 2010), en passant par la Louisiane et l’Alabama ( La porte du ciel , 2011), et par la Nouvelle-Angleterre ( Les villes de papier , 2018, Les ombres blanches , 2022 et La part de l’océan , 2024). Dans un premier temps, cette étude se penche sur la place qui est accordée au décor américain dans les trois premiers romans de Fortier, au moyen de la mise en scène d’espaces et de lieux qui sont caractérisés par leur marginalité et leur décentrement. Ces espaces et ces lieux préfigurent l’importance qui est accordée, dans les trois derniers romans publiés par l’auteure, aux écrivains américains du xix e siècle, qu’il s’agisse d’Emily Dickinson, de Herman Melville ou de Nathaniel Hawthorne. Les paysages et les livres en viennent ainsi à former une véritable Amérique de papier, à la fois physique et spirituelle.
