On voit revenir, dans les essais de Dominique Fortier , le motif discret du vestige. Le vestige ne fait pas signe vers la ruine ; il rend plutôt présent ce qui n’est plus. En ce sens, le vestige incarne la vie étrange, oxymorique, des restes : il mue le passé, dont il est la trace, en une « sorte d’éternité » qui trouve, dans certains objets (coquillages, agates, plumes, papillons, fleurs, papier), un mode d’existence paradoxal. Entre perte et enchantement, il sédimente du temps. Le vestige se rapproche d’une matière légère, fragile, capable de fixer le temps en éclats. Comme tel, il croise la quête d’une maison habitable (c’est-à-dire peuplée de mémoires) et la hantise de la disparition qui traversent les essais de façon insistante. À quelques exceptions près, le monde de Dominique Fortier tourne le dos au contemporain pour préserver des écales de temps légères comme une plume, ténues comme l’empreinte d’un oiseau, solides comme une maison. Le vestige recouvre ainsi l’idée même de l’écriture, cette trace dont l’imaginaire moitié botanique, moitié entomologiste se combine avec la décortication étymologique des mots susceptible d’exhumer des significations désuètes et de lointaines parentés pour les faire résonner à nouveau.
