Abstract
L’avenue Habib-Bourguiba à Tunis est aujourd’hui considérée par les Tunisiens comme l’artère la plus importante de la capitale. Cette perception est le fruit d’une stratification d’événements historiques étroitement liés aux pouvoirs qui lui ont donné naissance depuis 1861. Politisée à outrance, l’avenue est désormais un concentré de paradoxes allant de son statut de promenade et de lieu de loisir – qui doit continuellement être mis sous surveillance policière – à sa fonction d’espace public, hélas confisqué par les autorités qui y infligent un contrôle obsessif. Si les Tunisiens l’ont choisie dans plusieurs rendez-vous de leur histoire nationale pour transmettre immédiatement au pouvoir en place leur joie ou leur colère, c’est parce que ce lieu de la politique est chargé de symboles urbains qui continuent à immortaliser la trace de ses modeleurs. C’est l’histoire de ces symboles, particulièrement statuaires, que cet article tend à mettre en exergue.
