Abstract
Le royaume du Cambodge, placé sous protectorat français dans le second XIXe siècle, occupe une place singulière dans l’empire colonial français. Très tôt, les préoccupations pour l’héritage culturel khmer et sa sauvegarde accompagnent le discours colonial. Dès lors, des lieux dédiés à sa conservation et à sa valorisation tels la Sala ou le musée Albert Sarraut – dont certains placés sous la houlette de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) – sont créés et deviennent des lieux d’incarnation du pouvoir impérial, attestant la porosité entre politique et culture. Dans la phase de transition post-indépendance, les protocoles d’accords statuant sur le devenir de ces lieux vont contribuer à redéfinir les modalités de la relation franco-khmère entre recherche de souveraineté, affirmation nationale et maintien d’une forme d’influence française. À partir des archives scientifiques et administratives de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), des archives du ministère des États associés (1945-1957) et des publications officielles du ministère de l’Information du Gouvernement royal cambodgien (GRK), cet article s’attache à analyser, dans une chronologie large, ces lieux du politique, comme partie intégrante de la stratégie impériale et composante essentielle de la reconfiguration post-indépendance.
