ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria constitute a group of ubiquitous photoautotrophic organisms, some species of which are capable of producing toxins harmful to water quality and human health. Over the past several decades, the frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms have been increasing worldwide. In boreal ecosystems, however, the seasonal dynamics of cyanobacteria remain insufficiently studied. Against this backdrop, the present research aims to document the composition and dynamics of cyanobacterial communities in Lake Fortune, located in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Québec, Canada). The study is motivated by two key observations: first, the scarcity of research focusing on the cold season in northern lakes, which are often assumed to be unproductive due to ice cover and limited light availability; and second, the growing need to understand the influence of nutrient inputs and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on the structure and dynamics of cyanobacterial populations. The methodology relied on intensive monitoring of the water column of Lake Fortune between 2020, 2021 and 2022. Samples were collected at various depths and across different seasons. Data analyses performed using Excel and R focused on the taxonomic composition of cyanobacteria and the measurement of key physicochemical parameters. Multivariate statistical analyses were then applied to assess correlations between cyanobacterial abundances and environmental variables. The results revealed a strong dominance of the genus Planktothrix, persisting in the hypolimnion even under low light conditions, accompanied by Aphanizomenon and Limnothrix, while Microcystis appeared only sporadically. Seasonal dynamics highlighted peaks of abundance in summer and autumn, but also indicated the persistence of a non-negligible biomass during winter. Statistical analyses demonstrated that total phosphorus concentrations and DOC were the most influential factors structuring cyanobacterial communities, far exceeding the effects of temperature and pH. These findings challenge the paradigm that boreal lakes are biologically inactive during winter. The occurrence of winter blooms suggests specific adaptive strategies in cyanobacteria, such as efficient use of low light and tolerance to stratification. Compared with other studies conducted in temperate and boreal lakes, Lake Fortune is distinguished by the prominent role of DOC as a structuring factor, whereas previous research has primarily emphasized temperature and nitrogen. These observations carry important ecological and management implications. On the one hand, they underscore the need for winter monitoring of boreal lakes. On the other hand, they highlight the importance of controlling nutrient inputs in order to prevent conditions favorable to cyanobacterial blooms. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the interannual and seasonal dynamics of cyanobacteria in boreal lakes and opens promising perspectives for future research, particularly on toxin production, interactions with other phytoplankton groups, and the potential impacts of climate change.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
