Abstract
Toute la pensée du théologien et philosophe Paul Tillich est traversée par un souci de réfléchir l’expression du mystère chrétien en termes ontologiques (Sesboüé, 1981). La sotériologie tillichienne s’attarde ainsi à penser les conditions existentielles de l’homme comme une forme d’aliénation de sa nature essentiellement bonne. L’homme expérimenterait le passage de l’essence à l’existence dans une symbolique où, de manière cyclique ou successive, il serait habité par les phases de l’innocence rêveuse (le jardin d’Eden), de la chute (le péché) puis de la possibilité d’un salut (retournement) dans lequel il s’agirait pour lui « d’accepter d’être accepté en dépit du fait qu’il se sente inacceptable » (Tillich, 1949 : 267). Le film The Tree of Life du réalisateur Terrence Malick nous permet de suivre les membres d’une famille qui, face à la perte d’un des fils, vivent chacun des phases qu’il nous sera possible d’analyser à partir de la sotériologie tillichienne (innocence rêveuse, péché, chute et salut).
